ANGER!

After working for about 6 months in the Service Industry, I have come to the conclusion that I DO NOT have a single ounce of respect for Servers and/or Bartenders! I have been working as a Barback (Bar-Bitch) at a Bar and Grill inside the Hyatt Regency in Huntington Beach for some time now, so naturally I've had no choice but to observe my surroundings. My job is pretty much an apprenticeship with the eventual goal to become a bartender-- my duties include: stocking the bar at all times, making sure the bartender has all his necessary tools, cleaning the bar, providing ice and garnishes for all the drinks, preparing all of the non-alcoholic beverages, and opening/closing the bar. So to put it shortly, I do EVERYTHING minus pouring the actual alcohol. If we lived in a world that was fair (which we don't), the barback would make a little bit more than 15% of the Bartenders total tips, due to the fact that the barback does about 3x the amount of labor that a bartender does. But what am I thinking?! thats absurd! of course the bartenders and servers need ALL of their tip money because they are the only people on this earth that have bills and rent to pay! right??? It genuinely makes me sick to see the mentality that servers and bartenders have in this country. Don't get me wrong, I love getting tips just like anybody else would-- but whether i make $5 or $100 during a shift, it will have no bearing over the rest of my day. I have seen bartenders and servers get so flustered and upset by their tips, that it affects their work habits. Quite frankly it disgusts me. Tips were invented to be a courtesy for a service that was provided for you. Somewhere down the road, things got a little bit twisted and it become implied that you MUST tip for every service provided even if it was mediocre or poor. I think it is very rude for a server to complain about the amount they are being tipped. I think it's rude because I do not feel that they deserve the right to complain about how much money somebody else gives them, especially if they are just doing their job that they are ALREADY GETTING PAID FOR. Yes, I understand that servers get paid minimum wage because it is expected that they will receive vast amounts of tip money--but who's fault is that? Restaurant owners purposely pay their employees less so that they can make greater profits. This in turn causes a greater pressure on servers to hustle their customers and milk them for every cent. Also, I have seen that servers and bartenders treat foreign customers differently because typically foreigners do not tip as well as the white man. Most of the servers/bartenders I work with aren't educated enough to realize that in most foreign cultures, tipping is not a common practice. I just think the whole system is fucked up. I would gladly tip a server or bartender if he provided me with good service, but that doesn't seem to be the case in this day and age. A majority of servers that I come across these days are deadbeats half-wits that are rude and lazy. My question is, If my server is rude and lazy how come I'm the one that gets frowned upon for not tipping this cocksucker atleast 15% of my bill?? In this situation, i'd typically get guilted by my friends for being a "cheap ass" and end up tipping about 30%-- just because that server "goes through so much" that he deserves a good tip. 2 words: FUCK THAT. walking around taking orders and delivering food does not strike me as gruelling labor. Oh yah, I forgot about that emotional anguish that you must go through when a customer raises his voice at you because you forgot his side order of fries. I'm sorry but I'm not impressed, I can name 100 other jobs that force employees to work harder, where they DONT receive tips. how come doctors don't get tips? they're providing you with a service by SAVING YOUR LIFE. (probably from that heart attack you received by eating all that fatty food, you fat fuck) or what about a construction worker? or a painter? If you servers are that concerned, then find a better paying job!
